Foundations Devotional: Week 1, Day 4
The Holy Spirit—Helper and Comforter
Scripture: John 14:16-17
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.”
Before His crucifixion, Jesus comforted His disciples by promising that He would not leave them alone. The Holy Spirit, whom Jesus calls “another Advocate,” would come to be with them forever. The term “Advocate” (sometimes translated as “Helper” or “Comforter”) emphasizes the Spirit’s role in guiding, empowering, and comforting believers. The Holy Spirit is not just a distant power but a personal presence, living within every believer and actively working in our lives.
The Spirit’s work is multifaceted. He illuminates Scripture, helping us understand God’s Word and apply it to our lives. He convicts us of sin, prompting us to turn back to God in repentance. He empowers us to live out our faith, giving us spiritual gifts to serve others and strengthen the church. And He comforts us, especially in times of grief, doubt, or fear, reminding us of God’s love and promises.
The Spirit is also the one who sanctifies us, transforming us to be more like Christ. This ongoing work of sanctification is a partnership—He gives us the power to change, but we must also yield to His leading and cooperate with His work in our hearts.
Reflection:
- How often do you rely on the Holy Spirit in your daily decisions and struggles?
- In what areas of your life do you need to invite the Spirit to bring transformation, guidance, or comfort?
