Family Chat Part 3

Hebrews 12:5-11 (ESV)

5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

DISCIPLINE IS CORRECTION DRIVEN BY LOVE.

Hebrews 12:5-6

And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”

Proverbs 19:18

Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death.

DISCIPLINE ISN’T SOMETHING YOU DO TO YOUR CHILD, BUT FOR YOUR CHILD.

Hebrews 12:9-10

Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.”

SHORT TERM PAIN PRODUCES LONG TERM GAIN

Hebrews 12:11 “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

2 Timothy 1:7For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-discipline.”

Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

3 TYPES OF UNDISCIPLINED PARENTS

  1. LIFEGUARD PARENTS: OFTEN RESCUE A CHILD FROM CONSEQUENCES.

Galatians 6:7 “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”

  1. ETCH-A-SKETCH PARENTS: OFTEN INCONSISTENT.

Proverbs 29:15, 17 The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother…Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.

  1. SPLIT-DECISION PARENTS: OFTEN UNUNIFIED.

Amos 3:3 Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?

THREE NON-NEGOTIABLE PARENTAL EXPECTATIONS

  1. WE EXPECT FIRST TIME AND CHEERFUL OBEDIENCE.

Colossians 3:20 “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”

Philippians 2:14 “Do everything without complaining or arguing”

  1. WE AGREE TO NEVER DISCIPLINE IN ANGER.

Ephesians 4:26 “In your anger do not sin.”

  1. WE WILL DISCIPLINE PROMPTLY WITH INSTRUCTION AND RECONCILIATION.

Ephesians 6:4 “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”
