Foundations Devotional: Week 1, Day 2
The Father — Creator and Sustainer
Scripture: Genesis 1:1-2
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
The opening words of Scripture introduce us to God the Father as the Creator. Every part of the universe—from the largest galaxy to the tiniest atom—came into being through His divine word. But God didn’t just create and step back. He sustains everything He made. The laws of nature, the life cycles of plants and animals, and even the beating of our hearts all testify to God’s ongoing involvement in His creation.
The presence of the Spirit hovering over the waters in Genesis 1 shows us that creation was not only the work of the Father, but a divine collaboration within the Trinity. The Father, Son, and Spirit were all present and active in creation, just as they are all active in sustaining the world today. Colossians 1:17 tells us that in Christ, “all things hold together.” Even the details of our lives—our daily struggles, joys, and uncertainties—are held in the hands of the Creator.
Trusting God as our Father means acknowledging His sovereignty over everything, including our personal lives. It means recognizing that we don’t need to strive to control everything, because our Father is both Creator and Sustainer. He provides for our needs, guides our steps, and works all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
Reflection:
- When you feel overwhelmed by the world’s complexity or your personal challenges, how does knowing God as the Creator and Sustainer bring you comfort?
- How can you rest in the knowledge that He is actively involved in every part of your life?
